Dear Fellow Students,
I am writing to you on behalf of Disabled Students Association at San Jose State (DSA). The organization’s mission is to promote disability awareness on campus. The DSA is also a place for students with and with out disabilities to experience a social and supportive network of people and talk about everyday challenges. This letter is an invitation to you to consider joining the DSA.
Here’s a little information about me: I was born with Cerebral Palsy. After being a Journalism student at SJSU for the last three semesters, I know which areas need improvement. Accessibility on campus only covers one part of the issue. As many of you know, a disability does not make a student different. It just means he or she may have to do things another way to meet a goal. Many times needing an accommodation, like more time for an assignment, makes teachers think they have to treat us differently. Having a disability means dealing with different reactions everyday. Some people act or treat someone differently just because they are disabled. Sometimes they do this without knowing it.
By joining DSA, you will be able to talk about issues like those listed above and others that are important to you!
It is not enough to say we are diverse if we really are not accepted. This word just becomes one more word. The best place to start making sure this happens is a university. If this does not happen, generation after generation will deal with the same issues. Working together, we can make a change.
In the near future, DSA will have activities and meetings so other students, hopefully you, can interact with those who are disabled and those without disabilities and create a place where we can talk about our experiences and have fun in the process.
Thanks for your time. Please feel free to contact me at soledadrosas1[at]yahoo.com if you have any questions or are interested in joining the DSA.
Warm Regards,
Soledad Rosas
We’re a student club at San Jose State University. We welcome everyone! We welcome those with visible disabilities, those with non-visible disabilities, and those without disabilities who are interested in learning about our group!
